Description Andrew Greig 2007-07-16 22:31:01 UTC
Hi,
Thanks for 2.2, I thought I would install the Windows release and then try my data set. Installed from the .exe file, everything seemed to go well. When srting the program after installation, I got the hour glass but nothing started. I checked the processes running and gconf.d and gnucash-bin.exe were running but no visual evidence of that.

Do I need a certain amount of video power to run gc in Windows? In the same computer, everything works well on the Linux side.
I do not know how to start it from a command line in Windows, as I tried, but my memory of DOS commands is worse than rusty.

Do not know how else to assist you with the problem

I experienced pretty much the same thing (similar hardware, under XP) though GnuCash did start up automatically after installation OK. Got the tip box and the offer to run wizards. Went to pull down some of the menus and it froze up on File-->New-->(froze). I waited a few minutes then ended up ending the task when it was clearly no longer responding. Additional attempts to start up GnuCash nothing shows up -- no windows open, etc. The gnucash-bin.exe process does show up in the Task Manager and after a few moments a gconfd-2.exe process appears as well. A few moments later a second gconfd-2.exe starts up. If I leave things alone (walk away or go onto other tasks in another app) eventually a DOS-mode window will pop up labeled as "gconfd-2.exe" without anything in it then it goes away on its own within a minute or so. Process repeats.

Hope that helps a bit.

Whenever you have got the feeling that gnucash is frozen, please try to minimize all windows (windows-d, maybe even windows-m), then click gnucash in the window list. You might experience bug 395327.

@Andrew: Please try to kill all running instances of gconfd-2.exe and gnucash-bin.exe, then remove ~\gconf-$user and ~\orbit-$user completely (~ = C:\Documents and Settings\$user), take a look at ~\Local Settings\Temp\gnucash.trace.abcdef and maybe even unzip ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/binaries/win32/ORBit2/2.14/ORBit2-2.14.7.zip into the GnuCash program folder.

No, you don't need a modern computer; a rather old one should work as well.

This bug might also be related to bug 457100
