GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 45462
"View as %s" and "%s Viewer" composed messages hard to translate
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
#: libnautilus-extensions/nautilus-program-chooser.c:186 #: src/nautilus-window.c:820 src/nautilus-window.c:1056 #, c-format msgid "View as %s" This message in Nautilus is hard to translate. The problem is that it is composed, and that it is not clear what other messages are used in it. This causes trouble for translators. In Swedish, for example, words in sentences are never to have capitalized initial letters unless they are either the first word in the sentence, or are names. As it is now, the words/messages inserted here seem to be with capitalized initial letters throughout Nautilus and the different views. One solution would of course be to lower-case the Swedish translations for these messages, given that those messages that are used here are marked with comments in the source, so the translator can spot them. But this gives another serious problem - reportedly, these words are used in other composed messages ("%s Viewer"), and there an all lower-case Swedish translation would be wrong, as it is then the first word. The best solution I can come up with is not to use composed messages for this. ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2001-01-05 12:30:25 ---- Fixing this would require changes to oaf documentation, and all .oaf.in files for Nautilus components, as well as code changes to Nautilus itself. ------- Additional Comments From menthos@menthos.com 2001-01-05 15:14:43 ---- The other composed message, "%s Viewer", does also have similar problems, and should probably be made a complete message too. The situation is as follows: One of the words that are used as replacement for %s in the message is "List", in Swedish "lista". When used in the "View as List" sense, the Swedish word should be written that way; "lista". However, in the "%s Viewer" situation, the words will have to be concatenated in Swedish. Swedish often concatenates "expressions" and makes them one single word. For example, "Music View" is one word in Swedish; "Musikvisare". What makes the the "List"/"lista" situation special is that the word "lista" ends with a wovel. When words are concatenated, the first words ending wovel, should there be one, is stripped in Swedish. So the correct result is not "listavisare" but "listvisare". Of course, this is impossible to do as the message is now, but this problem would be solved if the message wasn't composed, that is, if it was written as a lot of messages, one for each viewer type. ------- Additional Comments From don@eazel.com 2001-01-09 00:48:57 ---- Put this on the table for 1.0 so we can talk about all these translation bugs. ------- Additional Comments From don@eazel.com 2001-02-15 22:30:22 ---- Maciej says this will require a patch to Bonobo. Ugh. ------- Additional Comments From mjs@noisehavoc.org 2001-02-19 15:37:15 ---- The files and types capplet also needs to be changed. ------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2001-02-19 16:59:17 ---- It will be simple to update the capplet once there is something to update it to. ------- Additional Comments From darin@bentspoon.com 2001-02-22 12:55:06 ---- *** Bug 46879 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** ------- Additional Comments From mjs@noisehavoc.org 2001-02-24 07:20:50 ---- Fixed it for Nautilus and updated oaf docs. Still need to update capplet, and optionally nautilus components outside nautilus (in the bonobo, eog, xpdf and ggv modules in particular) Will check in when less tired and can get good review. ------- Additional Comments From menthos@menthos.com 2001-02-26 19:24:42 ---- The fix in Nautilus works perfectly in my 200102261119 rpm build. As the changes affect more than Nautilus, I'm not marking it verified yet. ------- Additional Comments From menthos@menthos.com 2001-02-26 19:30:40 ---- It's not fixed yet in the 200102261119 rpm build of control-center I have here. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-09-09 20:53 -------
