I don't like the approach of xchat-gnome to use a button as a nicklist, since it feels not usable in a lot of cases, for example searching someone at the join time, when seeing if someone is connected, SENDING FILES... etc etc

It will be fantastic to have an option (or a plugin) to place the nicklist in the sidebar, as all other chat programs do. (not only irc... since the nicklist behaviour on a sidebar is the more usable)
