"I use the emote icon system in evolution quite a lot: it automatically replaces the text-emote with a graphic.
(Preferences > Composer Preferences > General tab > "Automatically insert smiley images")

The smilies are now being inserted as a red x, missing image icon .

Hi, confirming this bug, it happens on Gentoo and update Ubuntu Feisty Fawn as well.
