While I'm sure this is in the "much easier asked for than implemented" category,
it'd be nice if Nautilus monitored directories for changes on its own and didn't
require a "refresh" command to show changes to the window made by other
programs.  At least to me, UIs that do this feel like they're part of the OS
(MacOS, BeOS) rather than applications sitting on top of them (Windows).

Exactly! We planned this originally but find we can't do it for version 1.0.
This is closely related to bug 40779.
