Description Meredith Tanner 2007-05-10 23:09:57 UTC
Just like the summary says -- GIMP crashes and exits as soon as I click the text tool button. Happens with all image formats, all image sizes, every file I tried it with.

I installed the latest 'stable' release of GIMP -- same result. Rebooted -- same result. Installed the latest Windows update and rebooted again -- same result.

GIMP worked fine for me on this machine last week. The only change since then that I know of is that IT installed Acrobat Professional Suite. I thought Acrobat might have come with a font GIMP won't play nice with, but sorting my fonts by last modified date shows me nothing newer than 10/2006.

You could try removing the .fonts.cache-1 file from your %USERPROFILE% folder. (Typically c:\Documents and Settings\<username> where <username> is your username.) After that the first GIMP startup will be slower than usual.

Are you also using GAIM? Looks a lot like a duplicate of bug #314529.
Comment 3 Meredith Tanner 2007-05-11 14:42:06 UTC
I have GAIM installed, but in the process of trying to solve this problem I had already reinstalled the GTK+ distro from the GIMP website, and it didn't solve the problem.

Removing the fonts.cache-1 file did not solve the problem either.

Is there a way for me to provide debugging info without having to download source and compile a development version? I'm not familiar with Windows compilers (and haven't compiled anything for *mumble* years) but I expect I can figure it out if necessary.

Aha! Okay, I think this *is* the same issue as bug <a href="http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=314529">314529</a>. I uninstalled GAIM and reinstalled the GTK *again*, and this time it solved the problem.

Thanks, guys.
