Description David Rowell 2007-05-06 14:51:44 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I have a plain text work list that I keep on the desktop for ready access. I have repeatedly selected a special icon for the file.
When I update the file using Gedit the special icon is replaced with the standard text icon AND the icon is moved to another place on the desktop.
Nothing really serious but, to me, it is agrivating.

Steps to reproduce:
1. create file
2. open file with Gedit - add some text - save
3. move icon to right side of desktop
4. right click - properties - click icon - select a new one - close properties
5. double click special icon to open file in Gedit - edit file - save it

Actual results:
see description

Expected results:
I'd expect the same icon to remain in the same place on the desktop.

Does this happen every time?
As far as I can tell - I've tried the above step-by-step a couple of times

Other information:
My system is Ubuntu 7.04

This happens because gedit saves to a tmp file and then renames it to the original file. This is a normal way to save files since it avoids losing data if a crash happens in the middle of saving and gedit is surely not alone in doing this.

It's nautilus that should be fixed to understand this situation and preserve the metadata (icon, position, etc) to the new file.

Whatever the source of the problem it did NOT occur under Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. I upgraded to 6.10 then 7.04 about 2 weeks ago. Hope that factoid helps to identify the problem.
