The fd.o Icon Naming Spec defines named icons to use in applications' categories. Those icons are defined here: http://standards.freedesktop.org/icon-naming-spec/latest/ar01s04.html (Table 5)

.directory files should use those named icon, currently available in gnome-icon-theme

Fixed for 2.23.90, every category icon in the spec now has an icon in the HCLP and HCLPI themes.  (They're mostly duplicates of other icons, though, so ideally need some artwork love in future.)
