When nautilus is being used as a normal file browser, the status bar should
default to displaying the total number of files in the current directory, as
well as the total size. Currently, it doesn't say anything, unless you select
files. When one does select files, however, Nautilus does a good job of
displaying file the selection contents. However, the status information
disappears after a little while, even if the files are still selected. It
should stay there until they are no longer selected.

------- Additional Comments From sullivan@eazel.com 2000-09-12 16:52:42 ----

We inherited much of the current status bar behavior and haven't really thought
hard about it. These two suggestions sound reasonable and might be worth doing,
but they aren't very high priority. So I'll get around to them if I have time or
if doing them fits naturally with other work.

Changing to "old" target milestone for all bugs laying around with no milestone set.

i don't know why the status bar should show all this information, it's
already in the sidebar. seems like this would just further clutter the
ui and make it more confusing. i think this is notabug
Comment 3 Luis Villa 2002-04-22 07:42:50 UTC
Very low priority enhancement, but could concievably be seen as an
enhancement if done correctly.
Comment 4 Evert Verhellen 2002-10-13 16:50:52 UTC
The Side Pane displays this kind of information only when Side Pane
hasn't been disabled (it really does occupy a lot of screen
real-estate). It's reasonable to state that the Status Bar is also
suitable to display this kind of information as well.

I support the idea that the Status Bar should display the total number
of items in the folder, as well as the total size. I also can't think
of a good reason why the information in the Status Bar should
disappear after about 10 seconds (except for menu item tips).
