Description shirish agarwal 2007-04-03 19:05:01 UTC
Hi all,
It is actually a feature-request. My mother is an obsessed with the windows freecell and for her this one seems like a dull replacement :( Even though the Freecell did have screen space limitations but still she gets turned off. Can the cards be made more beautiful? More importantly can the background be changed to have some nature background or something like that, some .png or .jpg which a user could put in on the fly. Alternatively make Aiselrot could be made skinnable/themeable or whatever it could be done so people could download some stuff from the net and have fun. If this has been discussed and rejected then sorry to bring it up. If not, then more along the line could be to have a link which hot-links to some similar site as gnome-look.org/kde-look.org. Looking forward to your thoughts on this. I would not like to lose linux due to (IMO a stupid game like solitaire) but if she likes it I could make an effort so potentially hundreds or thousands of sons do not have to go through the same thing as I, nor their mothers.
So on behalf of all those sons & mothers beautify ;)

I believe other games allow you to drag an image to the window to change the background, so I can't see any real opposition to that at least. Card images have themes already (so yes, they can be made more beautiful, but someone has to do the real work of making new card themes), and Aisleriot doesn't seem to mind if I replace the png it uses for the background.

Currently the background is hardcoded as "cards/baize.png". It may be possible to make Aisleriot look for that file in a directory other than /usr/share/pixmaps, but I don't know how.

New card themes can be added at /usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-games-common/cards/. That also unfortunately requires root.

I would definitely support a non-root way to change these things if it's done by moving files around and not adding new UI. And I would support the ability to drag/drop a new tiled background (and possibly a new card theme, though that idea is a bit problematic because backgrounds and card themes can both be .png files). I have no idea what's acceptable if it involves adding new UI.

o.k. it seems tht the background is really hardcoded, for I used gconfd-editor and it had very limited settings, similarly there is no .aiselrot directory in the userspace. Although I have no knowledge of how u guys do stuff but is there possibility of using either of the things so we guys can change backgrounds in the near future. Similarly are their any alternative card themes, for I was able to go to /usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-games-common/cards/ and did see bonded.svg but hopefully you can shed some light if there are other variations to card images which can be found somewhere here or elsewhere. Another thing perhaps would be to use a corner of art.gnome.org if you guys are not using them already and have variations of card themes/images. This IMHO would open up space for contributions from outside.
Also is there a limitation to how big the .png can be, for I saw the baize.png is only 470 bytes while using some wallpaper or something would be out. Also is there any limitation to how many colors can it use or something or using a 16 m color wallpaper is possible.

Although making comparisions between commercial software made for windows and free software made by Gnome is like comparing apples to oranges but still have a look at http://www.goodsol.com/ . It would be cool if we can also incorporate some silliness such as the kids cardset http://www.goodsol.com/pgs/cardsets.html#kids Thanx for your time :)

There are a few more card themes in gnome-games-extra-data. I'm not aware of any others.

I can't see why there'd be a limitation on the .png. It's not like they're using something silly like DirectX to render it..

another alternate image/background in aiselrot
Comment 6 shirish agarwal 2007-04-06 04:55:28 UTC
ok both these pngs show that while the background can be changed what about the slot.svg Is there anyway to make that transparent or fill in some other color, picture etc. so it also looks elegant? Of course both the attaches are ugly as I am just exploring as to what or how things could fit.

On some probing with mum, she came up with 2 things:-
1. The cards have a stickiness feel to it which is not there in the stock windows freecell. Can something be done about that?

2. Sharpness - Even though the XP windows freecell is limited to something like 800*600 while Aiselrot can use the full 1024*768 she is not able to see the cards well. The cards look dull. Can this be looked upon/improved in the next version. Thanking you for your time.

Added version info. The game has been enhanced in looks but still there needs to be way where a user can change the background of the game without going root.

Christian, what do you mean by that?
Comment 11 Christian Persch 2011-04-25 12:05:28 UTC
Mass-moving only open aisleriot bugs to the new product. Search for "aisleriot-mass-move" to filter them.
Comment 12 shirish agarwal 2011-12-07 23:26:31 UTC
Reopening it as the bug is still there. Even in Aiselrot 3.2.2 its the same green background and no user way to change the background, or at least something that I could see.
Comment 13 Christian Persch 2011-12-07 23:34:46 UTC
It's fixed on master, not on stable, so you'll have to wait for 3.4.0. You then can change the background by using a custom CSS sniplet.
Comment 14 shirish agarwal 2011-12-07 23:43:37 UTC
Oh ok. Let the bug be there for now and mark it as fixed as and when 3.4.0 is released. Seeing the GNOME roadmap that means another 6 months to go. http://live.gnome.org/RoadMap
Comment 15 Christian Persch 2011-12-12 22:06:39 UTC
Sorry, but we close bugs when they're fixed in our code repository, not when there's a stable release out.
