GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 42277
Remote images should be allowed to be used as custom icons.
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:29:24 UTC
Currently, we do not allow remote images to be used as custom icons; instead we issue an error message if the user tries to do that. This is OK for 1.0, but eventually, we should copy the image to a local cache and use it from there, instead of thwarting the user. ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2000-10-16 19:49:45 ---- Batch-assigning QA ownership of remaining bugs to eli@eazel.com ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-02-09 11:36:04 ---- Duane is now the proud new QA owner of 'Sidebar', and 'Sidebar Panel: (Other)'. ------- Additional Comments From eli@eazel.com 2001-03-26 11:07:47 ---- QA Assigning to self. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-09-09 20:37 -------

How do you set a custom icon?
(In reply to comment #2) > How do you set a custom icon? In the Properties dialog, click on the icon. It pops up a file chooser dialog. In 3.6, I can't choose a remote imagem because the file chooser doesn't show remote mounts in the sidebar. In git master, thanks to the new shared Places Sidebar, I can choose an image from an ftp location and use it as a custom icon for a local folder. However, this has a few consequences: - It takes longer to load the view of the folder where the custom icon is visible. - If remote location is unmounted, the custom icon is replaced by a blank file icon. So, in git master, it is possible to set a remote image as a custom icon, but this is broken.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
