Run gnome-terminal. From there, run vim. (I used 6.4, but I see no reason there should be a difference with a different vim.) Enter insert mode; the bottom row should read "-- INSERT --". Hit enter until you reach the second-from-bottom row (just above "-- INSERT --").

Now, hit space until the cursor is above and to the right of "-- INSERT --". The bold text will be distorted. I don't know if this is a problem in gnome-terminal or in some library it uses, but I haven't changed the default configuration of my terminal at all.

I'm running gnome-terminal 2.14.2-0ubuntu1 on Ubuntu Dapper.

I spent quite a bit of time fixing vte's rendering for vim... Please try the recent gnome release (gnome-2.18 or specifically vte-0.16.x) and see if you can spot any remaining glitches.
