Description Rebecca Schulman 2001-09-10 00:38:27 UTC
This involves making the search bar usable for speakers of other languages.
this may require twiddling the order of the bar some..hopefully not major
structural issues.

I am cc'ing the gnome internationalization person that talked to me initially
about this bug

I don't think it's a given that there are no major structural issues, so perhaps
this is something we have to deal with soon.

So I am going to need some help from the translators to figure out what
sort of information they will need to provide me with. Here is my first guess
at information that the translators will want to provide about how to set up the
search bar:

1. translation for each of the option menu items (doable right now)
2. an order for the name of the criterion (e.g. size), the relationship choices
(e.g. bigger, smaller than) and the value (eg 50K), which should come 1st,
second, etc.

There are other concerns I have that may affect these things
1. Does the idea of a list of criteria separated by some sort of conjunction
(in english "and" for 1.0, possibly also "or" in the future) in the translation
to some language
2. Does the separation of the menus not make sense somewhere? For example,
should "size larger than" be only one word?
3. do the values entered in the entries need to be post processed specially at
any time?
4. is the date widget sufficiently internationalized?

John Sullivan suggested menthos and kanikus, who hang out on nautilus IRC
would also be useful resources for these questions. I'd be very interested to
get their input on these issues, in addition to those already cc'ed.

After talking with Christian (menthos on #nautilus and others)
I've learned some things that hopefully will improve translation and not
be too much work:
1. Is to add comments about the lines to be translated. Hopefully this will
resolve some of the context issues regarding the search bar text
2. Make sure that the search bar text is translated separately than other
text ("Name" for example was duplicated in other places and should be
differently translated, at least in Swedish, for use in the search bar)

Other than that, also finding some way to switch the orders of the three menus
for other languages will be useful. From talking with other translators,
it seems as if most of the other issues that I raised, while they could
theoretically improve translation, are not important enough to merit work for
1.0. I'd recommend that in these cases translators or testers file specific
bugs about lack of sufficient internationalization of the search bar, and we can
work from there.

This bug has been split up into smaller tasks. Marking this one invalid.

For reference of those cc'ed, the smaller bugs are 5244-5248
