Last modified: 2007-09-04 05:53:21 UTC
Version: 2.0.3 What were you doing when the application crashed? I have just installed camorama en gspca drivers to make my webcam (Logitech QC Communicate STX) work. The camera works, but Ekiga crashed. (In reply to comment #1) > And if you disable video preview and video in calls, ekiga works? I ask because > the crash doesn't look related to a video issue... I have no idea. I don't know how to do that, but if you can tell me I'll try.
You can enable/disable video preview from the main window ; there's an icon for this. You can enable/disable video in calls using the preferences window (codecs->video codecs->enable video support). You could also run the video test in the druid. I'm really not convinced it's a video-related crash.
I have no idea if it is or if it isn't. Thing is, I can't even start it. I click ekiga softfoon, then nothing happens for about ten seconds, then a error report is being made. I'm a beginner at this, I try things without being sure it won't crash my system. In the beginning of using ubuntu I had to reinstall it three times, because I broke it. I don't even know what the druid is. So, do you have other things I can try? (And please, idiot-version instructions)
Aaaaahhh!!!!! So I was right : nothing to do with your webcam at all! Ok, so this is a crash-on-startup. So let's go with the easy questions : how did you install ekiga ? From your distribution's servers, from binary packages downloaded from somewhere else, from sources ?
With synaptic
Could you tell us the dependancies of the ekiga package ? (paste us the output of the command "apt-cache show ekiga" run in a terminal)

I don't understand the backtrace ...
I must admit that seeing gmcontact_delete after calls to PPluginServiceDescriptor::~PPluginServiceDescriptor is definitely weird. Corrupted stack ?
Yes, most likely a corrupted stack, also regarding the other backtraces. Weird. J.
Is there a way I can try to fix it?
Can you find packages with debug symbols, install them, and try reproducing the bug ?
Reproducing the bug is simple: click Ekiga softfoon and it crashes. I can't find any debug packages. I tried deinstalling camorama (the last program I installed before Ekiga crashed). Didn't work: Ekiga still crashed. I tried deinstalling ekiga completely through synaptic and then installing it from source. Here I ran into quite a few problems. I followed the instructions on this: http://www.cutlersoftware.com/ubuntuinstall/#source site, and got when I tried to do 'sudo make install' the following: Opal: ( for dir in /usr/local/lib \ /usr/local/bin \ /usr/local/include/ptlib \ /usr/local/include/ptlib/unix/ptlib \ /usr/local/include/ptclib \ /usr/local/share/pwlib/make ; \ do mkdir -p $dir ; chmod 755 $dir ; \ done ) /usr/bin/install -c -m 444 lib/libpt_linux_x86_64_r.so.1.10.5 /usr/local/lib /usr/bin/install: kan de rechten van `lib/libpt_linux_x86_64_r.so.1.10.5' niet veranderen: No such file or directory make: *** [install] Fout 1 Pwlib: ( for dir in /usr/local/lib \ /usr/local/bin \ /usr/local/include/ptlib \ /usr/local/include/ptlib/unix/ptlib \ /usr/local/include/ptclib \ /usr/local/share/pwlib/make ; \ do mkdir -p $dir ; chmod 755 $dir ; \ done ) /usr/bin/install -c -m 444 lib/libpt_linux_x86_64_r.so.1.10.5 /usr/local/lib /usr/bin/install: kan de rechten van `lib/libpt_linux_x86_64_r.so.1.10.5' niet veranderen: No such file or directory make: *** [install] Fout 1 Ekiga (I didn't get further than ./configure): (lots of checking text, let me know if you want to read that too) error: Package requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.6.0 gthread-2.0 >= 2.4.0 esound >= 0.2.28 gconf-2.0 >= 2.2.0 libgnome-2.0 >= 2.2.0 libgnomeui-2.0 >= 2.2.0) were not met: No package 'gconf-2.0' found No package 'libgnome-2.0' found No package 'libgnomeui-2.0' found
Please keep away from the code since you obviously don't know enough to handle it...
I know that, and you're not helping. Do you happen to have a useful suggestion?
I am helping whenever I post to your bug report. A useful suggestion was made by Damien and was : "look for debug packages". I have another useful suggestion : 2.0.7 is out, you should upgrade to it, since it contains a few bugfixes and security fixes.
It looks like a broken upgrade to me if it crashes directly when starting. Something corrupted in the libraries ?
I can't upgrade to 2.0.7 yet, it's not on synaptic and as Snark pointed out, I should keep away from the code. Assuming something is corrupted in the libraries, how do I fix it?

I wonder if it is not a DUP of Bug 438868 ...
Hmmm... this problem has been fixed long ago : I don't know why this wasn't marked as fixed already!
