GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 413748
Focus on one file, when copying from DVD/CD-ROM.
Last modified: 2010-12-18 01:41:11 UTC
Please describe the problem: DVD and CD-ROM drives have horrible seek times. Therefore copying from such a file becomes painfully slow, if you copy two files at the same time. Maybe Nautilus should detect such a situation and execute only one copy request and pause all others having the same CD-ROM drive as source. As an example copying about 4 GB from my DVD drive takes just 10 minutes when copying just one file. When trying to copy multiple files at the same time it suddenly takes about an hour to finish this operation. Guess we should take this chance to be better than our competition. Steps to reproduce: 1. Open a DVD containing large files ("File A", "File B"). 2. Select "File A" and "File B" and drag them both on your Desktop. Note the time it takes to copy them. 3. Erase the copies on your Desktop. 4. Select just "File A" and drag it on your desktop. 5. Before copying "File A" finishes also select "File B" and drag it. Actual results: Variant described in step 2 takes about 10 minutes for copying 4 GB of data. Variant described in steps 4 and 5 takes nearly an hour to finish. Expected results: Both variants take a similiar amount of time. Does this happen every time? Yes, if you rally copy from some DVD/CD-ROM drive. Other information:
I think this would be useful also for hard disks - seeks while copying multiple files at once make the whole operation slower. Files copied/moved from or to the same device should be placed in queue and copied/moved one after another.
There is a nice visualisation of this idea on Ubuntu wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/copy_queing
