What were you doing when the application crashed?
Viewing inBox, changed "Show" choice box from "All" to "Unread".
Evolution's been confused about this folder for a couple of weeks now, showing it with more messages unread than there actually are.

Looks like bug 407968 to me, which in turn might be the same as bug 426496 which is fixed now
