Description Alan Broderick 2007-02-03 05:06:13 UTC
When entering text in Japanese no text is displayed until you either press enter (if done immediately this would usually put everything in hiragana - depending on the IME settings) or pressing the space bar twice (which may mean you have scrolled beyond the character you want and have to go back to the top of the list). It also means you cannot see if you have made a typo until attempting to change the text.

I have only looked at this on Windows

Other information:
Whether the characters being typed are displayed in the field being edited or elsewhere on the screen is less important that having them visible

Related: bug#399351, maybe duplicate? Also, in which entry fields does this problem occur (e.g. the "Description" field in the account register window) and in which does it not occur (e.g. any field in the "transfer dialog" that appears after clicking on the toolbar button "transfer")?

It is certainly similar. I am not familiar with Chinese input methods but that bug report seems to suggest that entry from the keyboard is not possible at all. With Japanese it is possible but you are typing blind and pressing the space bar to bring up the alternatives needs to be done twice. If you do it once (which would normally bring up the list) it does change so pressing enter would give you the first item in the list but you cannot see what it is until it has been set.

Sorry, that was an important omission. The problem appears to be only with the "description" field. The transfer dialog works as expect.

I have just started using a new build (r15574) and the problem seems to have been resolved. When attempting to enter Japanese text in any text field a separate IME window (the size of the text) opens at the top of the screen which displays text as it is being type and during conversion to kanji.

If you want more details on the environment see bug 403815 (closed) but if others aren't experiencing the problem I think this bug can be closed.

Thanks

Alan
