Not sure whether this should be fixed in vte (add an insensitive match option) or in g-t (by changing the regexes).  Anyway, g-t matches www.foo.com as URL, but not WWW.foo.com.  www.foo.xyz is matched though!  I think we should limit to "any two letters or com, net, org, ..." or "any two or three letter" toplevel domains only.
