Description Matthew East 2007-01-22 23:48:44 UTC
Hi there,

There is a help button in network-admin, but it doesn't seem to work (Ubuntu Feisty, gnome-system-tools 2.17.5). I'm recently doing some work on the Gnome user-guide, and if it's ok with you I'd like to put the help material in there, with the rest of the control center items.

I'd like to know if you guys maintain the manual, and if so, whether you agree with me adding it to the Gnome user guide material. Otherwise, I can add a link - but anyway you should fix the help button :)

Let me know.

Right now the help files are at http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-system-tools/trunk/doc/ , I update them from time to time (for example, they're now fairly up-to-date, but I wouldn't guarantee that always...), so it'd be definitely better for them to be in the user guide :)

Regarding the button, it seems to work for me... yelp shows /usr/share/gnome/help/network-admin/C/network-admin.xml here, which is installed by the gnome-system-tools package (Feisty here too, tried with the packaged network-admin)

Oh, maybe you have installed the g-s-t package for XFCE? (xubuntu-system-tools is the package, I think) it has some bits disabled in order to compile without GNOME deps, and showing help is one of the things that don't have any workarounds...

Could you check that?

Wow, that was a fast reply, thanks!

Well, I can't promise they will be any more up to date, the documentation team seems quite busy and quite low on manpower. If I move it to the user guide, are you still able to commit updates to that? I will be guided by you on this one, I'm happy to insert simply a link to the manual, or to move the material. If the latter, presumably you'll need to update the help button?

That file is installed and works fine if I open it in Yelp, but the help button isn't working.

No, I don't have that installed.

I have this warning when I open network-admin from a terminal with gksudo and click the help button:

(yelp:30643): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

Let me know if I can debug further.

If I request it, I'm sure there wouldn't be any problem

Hmmm, yep... but I don't think it should be a pain, and I'm sure it'll get more eyes on the docs (and translations!) than where it is currently...

Ooh, right, I've got a change to allow my user access the backends through DBus (not requiring gksudo to run the tools), I've tested them with gksudo and I get the same problem, and ps shows lots of gnome-help processes (one per click), but nothing's shown... Looks like a problem in gksudo use, I think I'd file a bug either in ubuntu or in gksudo

Agreed, ok. You request, I'll move. :) I can't *think* of anything that would break as a result of moving it... except the help button.

Ok, I'll you know when this is done.

Ok, maybe it's this one: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus-glib/+bug/71248 (marked as fixed but I've posted anyway). Thanks for your help.

Hi again Carlos,

We've now imported the English version of the network-admin manual into the User Guide. I'll let the translators know to merge their po files and screenshots.

Will you change the necessary stuff on your side for the next release?

Matt
Comment 6 Carlos Garnacho 2007-02-11 18:00:18 UTC
Matthew, it would be nice if the manuals for the rest of the tools (users, time, shared folders and services) would be moved to the user guide too. It's better to keep them together, and I'd still be able to request commit access for changes and so...

According to its developer(s), gnome-system-tools is not under active development anymore. Functionality has been mostly integrated into GNOME Control Center / "[System] Settings".

It is unlikely that there will be any further active development.

free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone takes the responsibility
for active development again.
