Description James Ogley 2007-01-09 08:59:08 UTC
When I transcode Ogg files to my iPod, the .m4a files are created and then copied to the iPod when I synchronize it.

The problem is that when I try to play them either on the iPod or from the iPod in Banshee, they all just skip to the next track (which means I get through a playlist very quickly). The same happens if I play the local .m4a files directly by including them in Banshee's command line.

This information might help:

ogley@riggwelter:~> file Documents/ogg/Courtney\ Pine/Devotion/.banshee-dap-01.\ Intro\ -\ Release.m4a

Running Banshee 0.12.0, I have the same problem with transcoded FLAC files. The original files are fine, the transcoded files will not play on either the iPod or with banshee on the command line.

Example:
flac:
$ ls -l 01\ -\ Track\ 1.flac
-rw-r----- 1 jdaluz users 12075082 2006-01-24 14:38 01 - Track 1.flac

$ flac -t 01\ -\ Track\ 1.flac
flac 1.1.2, Copyright (C) 2000,2001,2002,2003,2004,2005  Josh Coalson
flac comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. This is free software, and you are

01 - Track 1.flac: ok

m4a:
$ ls -l .banshee-dap-01\ -\ Track\ 1.m4a -rw-r--r-- 1 jdaluz users 3144438 2007-03-28 23:01 .banshee-dap-01 - Track 1.m4a

$ faad -i .banshee-dap-01\ -\ Track\ 1.m4a

Unable to find correct AAC sound track in the MP4 file.

Is there a gstreamer pipeline that can be run via gst-launch-0.10 to try to replicate the transcoding banshee is doing and see where the problem is?
Comment 2 Jose M. daLuz 2007-03-31 21:11:29 UTC
I should mention I sync with the Manual Sync method as my library is much larger than my iPod's 30GB drive.
Comment 3 jason fuchs 2007-04-18 07:27:52 UTC
I confirm this with banshee 12.1 as well, via 2 systems running archlinux. Each system has all gstreamer0.10 plugins installed. Same result with a second gen ipod shuffle, and a sixth gen ipod video. As an interesting side-note, I am able to play the resulting AAC/m4a files with Audacious, but Banshee and the iPod wont play. Also when direct importing to AAC/m4a format from CD, I'm receiving the same errors, unable to play the songs in banshee. I believe the severity of this bug should be elevated as this is a major functionality of Banshee that doesnt seem to be working.

Confirmed also with Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 using Banshee 0.12.1 from the repositories. All Gstreamer plugins in the repositories are installed.
Comment 5 Jose M. daLuz 2007-04-30 22:53:13 UTC
I just had this happen again, but this time with rhythmbox 0.10.0, not banshee. This would point to it being a gstreamer issue rather than a banshee issue.
Comment 6 Aaron Bockover 2007-05-14 17:34:20 UTC
Don't use AAC in Banshee - it's completely broken in GStreamer. Transcode to MP3 instead.

Comment 7 James Ogley 2007-05-14 21:20:10 UTC
I didn't specify what to transcode to, I just dragged songs to the iPod, perhaps the solution is that Banshee should transcode to MP3?
Comment 8 Aaron Bockover 2007-05-14 23:31:43 UTC
Banshee will let you transcode to whatever is supported by both your system (GStreamer) and the iPod. The case may be that you have faac+ffmux_mp4 installed and no MP3 encoder (Xing or LAME), so it's just defaulting to faac.

Install an MP3 encoder for GStreamer and right click on your iPod in Banshee and set it to be the transcoder for your iPod.
