perhaps adding a font size guard prompt would help avoid entering 5012px font sizes thus freezing gimp and/or your PC.

I have done this once or twice. This isn't much a bug, but I didn't know where else to suggest this.

A Gimp usability forum where the developers actually care would be awesome. I wouldn't mind starting something like this for open source apps in general.
