Description Stephan Ritscher 2006-11-09 15:16:58 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Sometimes the 'From' field in the list view of a folder and in the header of the email is displayed incorrectly. It looks like
=?iso-8859-1?Q? Some sender ?= <some.email@address.com>
So obviously the information which codepage to use is not interpreted.

Steps to reproduce:
I'm sorry, but I don't know which email clients produce emails like the one above.

Actual results:

Expected results:

Does this happen every time?
Depends on the email client which sent the email.

Other information:
Comment 1 Stephan Ritscher 2006-11-09 15:18:48 UTC
I found an email with the same problem in the subject field, but I'm not sure, whether it's an error of evolution (the email is quite old, anyway)
Comment 2 Jeffrey Stedfast 2006-11-09 16:28:01 UTC
it's probably not correctly encoded
Comment 3 Stephan Ritscher 2006-11-09 16:46:38 UTC
If I receive the same email with Outlook, the header is displayed correctly.
Comment 4 Jeffrey Stedfast 2006-11-09 17:31:56 UTC
that doesn't mean it's encoded correctly, it just means Outlook knows how to handle the brokenness (probably Outlook's own brokenness)
Comment 5 Frederic Crozat 2007-11-10 12:14:11 UTC
Confirming bug.

Situation has improved with Evolution 2.12.x :
From header is correctly displayed when displaying the mail (thanks to efh_format_header) but not in the mail list "from" column. It would be great to decode From header there too.

Problem is becoming more visible now with GMail IMAP implementation which is re-encoding email header when storing them.
Comment 6 Louis-Francis Ratté-Boulianne 2008-03-05 05:44:22 UTC
Any chance to get this bug fixed ?? I know it's not really visible for people speaking English...but for other languages using special characters it's really annoying.

Confirming the bug in Evolution 2.21.92. The "Sender" column appears with "=?ISO-8859-1?Q?" but the "From" line when viewing an email is all right.

Thank you
Comment 7 Gabriel Speckhahn 2008-03-06 22:29:46 UTC
If the sender name contains any non-ASCII characters, this bug shows up. I use Evolution to access my Gmail account from an IMAP server, Thunderbird shows the names correctly.
Comment 8 Ola Dogma 2008-03-07 12:18:39 UTC
Confirming this bug. Using Swedish characters like åäö and GMail IMAP, the from tag shows up correctly in KMail, Claws Mail etc.

the mail in question

Confirmed for Evo 2.20.0
I've attached 2 screenshots showing the problem and then mail generating it.
When I recive the mail in my imap inbox the bug shows, if I copy the problematic mail to my inbox the header gets unbroken (se screenshots)

Confirmed for Evolution 2.22

It appears nobody's working on this bug. I could fix it if someone points me the source.

Encoding peoblem in "from" field

I have a similar problem. In my case it's with Hebrew. The "subject" field is fine, only the "from" field has this problem. I can also confirm that it only happens when using IMAP (Gmail)
Comment 15 hezy.amiel 2008-04-07 23:15:28 UTC
in Hebrew and in other non European languages this bug effects all the text in the "From" field, not just isolated letters. This means that the "From" field becomes unreadable rendering Evolution almost unusable. I therefore suggest that the importance level of this bug should be raised.
Comment 16 ljuksi 2008-04-08 18:08:04 UTC
It is already fixed in Evolution 2.23

Confirming that the test mail in comment 11 renders correctly in Evolution 3.2.3.
Closing as FIXED.
