Thanks for taking the time to report this bug.
Unfortunately, that stack trace is missing some elements that will help a lot to solve the problem, so it will be hard for the developers to fix that crash. Can you get us a stack trace with debugging symbols? Please see http://live.gnome.org/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your attention to this, but I am a newby and can not tell you much more about this other than what was sent.

Sorry

All we ask for is to install some special packages on your system and to trigger the crash again. feel free to ask if something is not clear to you.

I now don't get any desktop icons at all, and nautilus crashes as soon as I ask it to display anything. This time I selected "Places" then "Desktop".

Let me know if you need more backtrace information.

only 2.16 crashes so far.
this is a duplicate of bug 349840 which has been fixed in november 2006.

this crasher here has the line
  • #9 IA__g_assert_warning
    at gmessages.c line 552
bug 349840 comment 5 has the line
** ERROR **: file nautilus-file.c: line 207
(nautilus_file_new_from_relative_uri): should not be reached
aborting...

the fix was http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/nautilus/trunk/libnautilus-private/nautilus-file.c?r1=12546&r2=12569

the fix is included in nautilus 2.16.3. anybody please update to a more recent nautilus release, thanks.
