GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 367194
Indenting disk-usage bars
Last modified: 2013-07-21 09:35:40 UTC
I am posting here a private mail I received from an user, which could be a suggestion to evaluate. This is the mail: ---------------------------------------------------------- Hi, I don't know if this is the proper way to make a suggestion but I'll give it a shot, and please tell me if it isn't :) Anyway, I just started using your app and I think it's great! I'm so glad I don't have to use "du" anymore, which is just so cumbersome. The treemap is neat too. There is one thing though, that I think would make the app much better. I don't know how hard i would be to implement, but I'd really like to have the small "disk usage bars" indented much like the directory tree. The tool is supposed to help me analyze the disk usage so I can find what takes up most space so I can prioritize when I need to clean up, but as it is now, after a bit of clicking around, it's more confusing than helping. I soon find myself in the situation where I think I want to focus on the red disk usage bars, but have one red progress bar that is 135Mb and a green one that is 890Mb and it's the green one I want to remove, not the red one. They are of course on different directory levels, but it's really confusing and it renders the disk usage bars rather useless, and instead of helping me I spend my time trying to ignore the bars while comparing three different directory trees using the Mb / Gb numbers. If the disk usage bars where indented just like the directories, I could easily compare different levels and see what red part that corresponds to some other yellow and green parts, and I wouldn't have to confuse different red bar with others. -------------------------------------------------------------------
Created attachment 249682 [details] [review] Move the progress bar on the left of the folder name In this way it gets indented, making it more immediatly obvious the directory depth level it refers to.
Created attachment 249683 [details] Screenshot I think it's worth experimenting with this solution
I like it. Let's also kill the "Usage" column, the visual representation is enough and we do not have much space
Pushed along with the 'usage' column removal
