GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 35342
GNOME menus do not comply with Fitts' Law
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
Package: gnome-core Severity: wishlist Version: 1.2.4 Synopsis: GNOME menus do not comply with Fitts' Law Class: sw-bug Distribution: Debian woody System: Linux 2.4.0-test12 i686 unknown C library: C library 2.2-5 C compiler: 2.95.2 glib: 1.2.8 GTK+: 1.2.8 ORBit: ORBit 0.5.3 gnome-libs: gnome-libs 1.2.8 libxml: 1.8.10 gnome-print: gnome-print-0.25 gnome-core: gnome-core 1.2.4 Description: Again, working with http://www.asktog.com/columns/022DesignedToGiveFitts.html and Fitts' Law, it would be much better from a usability standpoint to have GNOME put its applications' menus at an edge of the screen, effectively giving them either infinite width or infinite height. Tog asserts in the URI above that the Macintosh menubar, for example, is much faster than the Windows menu system, because it allows the user to "throw" the cursor towards the bar at a much higher velocity than with Windows, because they know they will always hit the menubar in the Macintosh case. With Windows (and GNOME/X by extension), for the most part, the user must slow down and hunt for the menu item he wants. It would be best for the GNOME Project to take the time to make this small change; in the long run, it will provide major user benefit. ------- Bug moved to this database by debbugs-export@bugzilla.gnome.org 2001-01-27 15:10 ------- This bug was previously known as bug 35342 at http://bugs.gnome.org/ http://bugs.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35342 Originally filed under the gnome-core product and general component.
