Description diabo 2006-08-25 18:13:36 UTC
Many DVD players offer to change aspect ratio in order to avoid black frames at the top and bottom of the screen. However, they clip the image to the requested size, unlike totem which keeps the full image and stretches it. It would be nice if Totem had this feature.

* Use case:
 - John wants to play a movie (aspect ratio: 1.85) on his widescreen laptop (aspect ratio: 1.6) and would rather miss the sides of the picture than have black bands above and below.
 - Jack wants to play a 4:3 video which has black bands and would like to be able to achieve a true fullscreen on his wide screen, eg. by choosing a 16:9 aspect ratio. (In this case, the black bands to remove are on the sides of the screen)

* Solutions:
 - Add a switch to select between clipping and stretching in the aspect ratio menu.
Or more user-friendly:
 - Add a "remove black bands" button in fullscreen mode which would zoom in the picture enough to remove the bands.

(I use totem-gstreamer)

The GStreamer backend doesn't have zooming, which would fix your problem.
Tim, do you know the bug number on top of your head?

It's bug #171916, marking as duplicate for now.
