As a Google Summer of Code participant I am developing a new library for GNOME
single-instance applications. Project information and details could be found at:
 * http://guniqueapp.akl.lt/ -- contains source code, patches, tips and useful links
 * http://live.gnome.org/SingleInstanceApps -- contains the overview & discussions

Although some fallbacks for older software are included, this library is most useful when used together with patched GTK version, see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=347375 , as well as with metacity 2.15.21/later or other window manager, reacting to _NET_STARTUP_ID property changes of a window.
