Description Elijah Newren 2006-08-11 00:09:41 UTC
I'm karma whoring by reporting another feature request. Er, I mean, I've got some interesting ideas about the points system. ;-)

So, as the updated points description page (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/page.cgi?id=points.html) now says, points are "a form of aggregate-over-time score from the Weekly Bug Summary". However, contributed and reviewed patches are not yet counted. Should we count them? uws says yes for contributed patches (http://uwstopia.nl/blog/2006/08/bugzilla-points), but doesn't consider reviewed patches. Including reviewed patches might be a good way to encourage maintainers, including myself, to review patches more.

One potential drawback would be that it might be seen as tilting 'the game' in favor of coders, whereas bugzilla has traditionally been trumpeted as a good place for non-coders to have an impact. Granted, we don't want to think of it as 'a game' too much, but I do think points makes bugzilla more fun and it's extra important to make it fun to the non-coders.

Another item to consider is that it might result in people setting patch statuses when they shouldn't. So if we did implement this, we might want to wait for the PatchSquad (live.gnome.org/PatchSquad) to get started and the pseudo-review state to get added.

One possibility to consider if we don't want to lump patches together with normal points is to have two numbers listed; e.g. "points: 26, 17", meaning 26 points via the comments/reports/closures method, and 17 points via patch contributions/reviews method.

Just some thoughts. So...opinions?

This does seem to be a common request (among coders), but I think the cons outweigh the pros. Marking WONTFIX.

Insomnia made me end up bugzilla-point browsing at 7am and ended up here...

Just want to note that triagers have already hijacked the point system. IMO when you see someone with more than 8000 closed bugs and less than 40 opened ones, something's wrong with them having 23 points, a luxury very few maintainers can afford.
