Description Matthew East 2006-07-31 09:10:26 UTC
Generally speaking, I organise my digital and non-digital photos in directories according to where I took them.

As such I don't like viewing my photos by time, because most of them don't have accurate times, I like viewing them by where I have organised them. But f-spot's folder view functionality seems to be quite undeveloped - it doesn't allow me to browse different folders but presents all the photos in a single screen.

So for my use case I find gthumb much more suitable. Is it possible to include some functionality for me use case in f-spot? I like the app.

Matt,

This was already discussed, but I'm not sure that was on bugzilla. Good point for you to remind it !

For this, F-Spot needs 2 new things: a new FolderWidget (like) the TagWidget displayed on the left, where you could select which folders to display, and extending the PhotoQuery to filter that selection...

I change this as enhancement
Comment 2 David (djst) Tenser 2006-09-11 08:05:27 UTC
More specifically, F-Spot doesn't separate folders from each other. Also, even if you browse by folder, the photos in subfolders of a particular folder get merged together with the parent's photos. This leads to confusion if you e.g. have one folder called Birthday2006 and a subfolder called Birthday2006/Originals, where photos from both folders would be merged into one.

I too prefer to browse and organize my photos according to the folder structure already on disk. Picasa from Google does this right and respects my folder structure and clearly separates different albums (folders) in the thumbnail view. F-Spot should try to mimic this behavior closely for its folder view mode.

I second this request. It would be very useful for me too. I have >20,000 or so photos that I took over the last few years. They are more or less organized into detailed folder structures. I have tagged ~8,000 of them now with f-spot but duplicates and inability to follow the folder structures easily are giving me a lot of headache. I should have imported them folder-by-folder.
Comment 4 Fridtjof Busse 2007-03-25 10:40:07 UTC
I miss this feature as well. Picasa does this quite nicely btw.
I'm not going to tag my several thousand pictures, so I'm really looking forward to a working folder display.

+1 from me. I have over 10,000 photos already arranged into a directory structure. I do not have time or desire to tag them. Browsing by timeline is nice, but I really need to browse by folder. Thanks!

This idea has been discussed at the Ubuntu brainstorm site. Vote yes if you can:

The voting is nice. But the problem is not only the browsing of folders. I'm not able to get out were a picture is rely saved, with F-Spot at all.

There is also still no way to find doubles of the same folder or file (picture) in the DB! If you handle more then 10'000 pictures, you can easily double import the same folder.

Maybe bug 507429 can be useful for you.
Comment 10 thomas meier 2008-05-07 18:07:07 UTC
OK, thats a way. But I not rely like to copy the information. I like to see them and to sort by filename, folders or by both. I like to use Folders like the Tags... Pleas have a look at Picasa. May it enplanes the need.

Why is there no information about the folder and the filename in the "Metadata browser"? It would be the most important meta data!

Why can't I view the path and filename not in place of the date in the pictures-browser?

To see the size a folder is useless if you not know it's name (path)!

It would be nice, if it would be possible to use all meta data's from the file system, the f-Spot-DB and Exif, to sort and brows!

I typically take 500 - 800 snaps per trip and only 300 turn out to be good. I sort them and copy the good ones into a new folder then work on the snaps in that folder.
Moreover a few generations have grown up forced to think layout & organization in terms of folders. However the developers were to "braindead" to conceive using f-spot browsing and editing snaps by folder!! To top it the Gnome team is sitting on this bug as unconfirmed wondering if its worth it?!!

This is 2008! After years of chasing Windoz and claiming linux is a better alternative, we have basic problems like this!!

This was meant for another bug - Bug 349403

Please delete it from this CR

Comments from bug #Bug 544487 – Views should include folder...

Everyone organizes their large photo collections by date because
1) this is how the pictures are taken
2) this is how photo management programs group them on import typically
3) you need to be able to get at the folders from outside of the application.

I cannot stress point 3 enough. This is critical for backup/recovery, passing
to friends, etc.

What I'm talking about is that on import, f-spot should by default create
folders such
    Pictures/2008-07-01
    Pictures/2008-07-05
This is the best starting point, since 90% of the time, each album is separated
by day. The date should be pulled in from exif data. I actually organize my
albums by year, then date + description. For example,
    Pictures/2008/2008-07-01 Birthday Party
    Pictures/2008/2008-07-05 Camping
This should be configurable as everyone has their own preferences here. Yes,
even the format
    Pictures/2008/07/01
    Pictures/2008/07/05
should be supported.

The point is that editing the folder name from outside of f-spot should allow
f-spot to pickup the changes and continue without failing or requiring to
reorganize.

Yes it should be viewable by folders as well from within FSPOT.

Thanks.

Folder organization and view within Windows Gallery
Comment 15 Ivan Stetsenko 2009-04-15 17:50:41 UTC
Actually, there are quit a few reasons why sorting by folder will be extremely useful feature.

1) Sometimes, there are photos from more than one person which describes similar date. In this case, they will be mixed up using current mode.

2) Tag system may not be useful if these photos were brought from another person. In this case, the tag method will be completely inefficient, and the majority of f-spot functionality can still be used, e.g. export functions or editing tools.

It should be a really simple change, and it will improve f-spot a lot. Please add it at some point!

Having to use folders means that the current way of classifying photos is insufficiently capable. Adding folders is not the correct solution though: we'll add extra metadata dimensions at some point. Also, users shouldn't care about folders, from the vision statement [1]:

> F-Spot is a cross platform application for organizing thousands of photos. It
> shuns 'organizing in folders.' instead, metadata is the basis for viewing and
> drilling down the collection. Adding and maintaining metadata is easy and
> enjoyable in F-Spot.

Get ready to be steamrolled by shotwell. They are currently implementing this.
