It would be great to have source highlighting support for flex/bison (lex/yacc) files. Is it currently possible to support "modes inside modes" (i.e. yacc files contain some C in specific places)?

No, 'mode inside mode' is not supported, work is ongoing to write a more powerful highlighting engine that allows that

there is yacc support in gtksourceview 2.
