Description Mike Hommey 2006-07-17 18:14:28 UTC
Please describe the problem:
I don't really know how the art display plugin works and how it gets the album covers, so I don't know if it's related to the plugin or to the database it uses on the web, but I got a very wrong result that I will attach as a screenshot.

I usually get no album cover for japanese songs, but when i finally got one, it got ... wrong.

Steps to reproduce:

Does this happen every time?

wrong album cover

The artist is 東京スカパラダイスオーケストラ (Tokyo ska paradise orchestra). The album is 'On Tour' discs 1 and 2. The shown cover is... Irish folk festival.

I believe this happens because the plugin is only fetching data from Amazon.com
Is there a chance to fetch the covers from Amazon Japan and other localized versions?
Comment 3 Mike Hommey 2006-07-23 20:31:56 UTC
Mmmmmmm considering I get japanese covers for some american bands, I guess it already uses Amazon japan. Maybe it's an encoding problem ?
Comment 4 Mike Hommey 2006-07-23 20:43:19 UTC
(here I meant I get the correct cover, but the japanese version of it)
Comment 5 James "Doc" Livingston 2006-07-24 15:19:15 UTC
It already uses Amazon Japan is your locale is 'ja' (and German Amazon for 'de'). The problem is that Amazon is returning the wrong image.

This is a general problem, as it gets around 10% of mine (en_AU, which uses the US site) wrong as well. The best suggestion so far is to add an easy way of being able to do manual Amazon searches, and change the art to be whichever result you want.

In many cases it may also be due to the fact that Amazon doesn't have the art.

The thing is that amazon japan *has* the cover for this album:
http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/search/ref=nb_ss_gw/249-3306445-4951519?__mk_ja_JP=%83J%83%5E%83J%83i&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=%93%8C%8B%9E%83X%83J%83p%83%89%83_%83C%83X%83I%81%5B%83P%83X%83g%83%89+on+tour&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

Can't there be an encoding problem when looking for the artwork in the plugin ?

I think I have a similar problem, some of my songs have umlauts in the artists name (röck döts!). For example Queensrÿche and Motörhead. I have trouble getting both covers and lyrics for these. Renaming the artist to Queensryche or even Queensrche seems to solve this.

I use the en_GB locale.

The patch looks OK to me. Does this have any impact on album art searches for non-Japanese artists?
Comment 10 Jonathan Matthew 2007-12-27 13:50:09 UTC
To answer my own question, no, this doesn't seem to have any impact on album art searches for non-Japanese artists. If it turns out that my minimal testing has missed something, I'm sure we'll hear about it in several months time or something.

I've committed the patch. Since this should fix the specific case this bug was opened for, I'm closing the bug. I'm sure we have a few other 'wrong album art' bugs still open anyway.

Why not have an option to ban certain image-files to be used for a particular album?
If you get the wrong cover choose some option "Do not use this cover for this album" forcing Rhytmbox to not use this image-file and perhaps search for another one.

(I've encountered perhaps 10-15 cases of wrong cover art in my collection of about 15.000 songs)
