Description Karderio 2006-07-13 18:16:47 UTC
There does not seem to be a pause function in the mines game.

I think it would be handy to have one, I suppose you are no less likely to want to pause a game of mines than any other game.

Love, Karderio.

Hi Karderio,

In gnomine there is an "auto-pause" feature which activates when the window lose the focus. Do you think we need an explicit pause button?
Comment 2 Andreas Røsdal 2006-07-14 10:03:37 UTC
I think gnomine should have a pause menu item, that behaves like the other games.
It is important that the games are paused in a consistent way.

I will implement this as part of the consistent pause-menu item patch that I am working on.

Hi :o)

[I finished writing this about ten seconds before Andreas posted his comment, a lot of it could be resumed to "I agree with Andreas" :]

I see, it seems to be quite handy to have an auto pause like that - after all, why have the game running while minimised, it's already a pain that you boss walks by to look over your shoulder every hour, this shouldn't make you loose your game also :). I don't think it is as discoverable as a pause button though, when a user wants to pause a game, I think he would be more likely to look for a pause button than anything else...

I believe this is rather important for consistencies sake also. I think coherence is a primordial goal four our pet desktop, it's also a major challenge and for this more than anything the devil is in the details. (Just mentioning this in case it looks like I'm making a fuss over unimportant details :) So I think it would be very nice to have a pause button, to complement the auto pause function.

Gnometris has both these functions and seems to work very well, however other games do not pause when minimised : mahjongg, nibbles and tetravex. Would it not be nice if these games also had these functions ? Also the prominent "paused" caption in gnometris and mines seems like a rather good idea, so users don't wonder why their game hes blocked, especially after an autopause. Do you agree that these would be useful features ? If so I don't at all mind filing bugs for these. (I may also get round to submitting patches for this kind of thing, no time soon unfortunately though)

Love, Karderio

Gnomine now has a pause menu item. This has been fixed as part of Bug #346969.
