Description André Klapper 2006-06-10 13:55:39 UTC
in the current 2.7.2.1 main menu, there are several changes in the "view" menu:

Current View
Window
Layout
Preview
Switcher Appearance

"layout" and "preview" are totally meaningless. i'd say that no user would now what he can expect in the submenus. i'm also scarred that translation of this will become even more cruel. i already have problems to remember that i have to go to the "windows" menu to change components, it's also a pretty poor meaningless menu item name (this is destructive criticism though, as i don't have a better proposal).

the "vertical view" and "classic view" under "preview" aren't previews in my opinion, but views.

why not restoring the old position of "show message preview" and moving that "vertical view"/"classic view" stuff to the preferences, where it belongs to?
either i HAVE a widescreen, or i HAVEN'T one. at least i don't plan to switch between classic and vertical view half of the day.

(expect more bug reports about vertical view to come, have some in the line here.)

reassigning to srini.
Comment 2 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-06-12 05:06:38 UTC
:) Cool. Will fix this.
Comment 3 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-06-21 04:29:26 UTC
hmm I misunderstood the bug. I dont think this has to be put in preferences. IMO the real fix is a alt name for Layout. I would welcome a suggestion.
Comment 4 André Klapper 2006-06-21 07:38:49 UTC
srini, how often do you expect users to switch between vertical and normal view? as often as they change evolution's timezone setting i'd say.
if evo is installed on a widescreen computer, the user wants to use the vertical view; if not, then not. so this is a long term setting which should go into the preferences and shouldn't clutter the menus.
Comment 5 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-06-21 08:21:12 UTC
Andre: You are right. But it doesnt fall under any criteria of mail pref. If we have to do, we have to add a new col for this, and most probably it will be lost in the sea. I guess every single client that has vertical view has it in mail only. May be im biased :). But im not so eager to add a new tab for a check box. I dont see under what tab you can do. All such layouts are in menus only in Evolution. This could be the odd one, if we do this. This is just my opinion.
Comment 6 André Klapper 2006-07-11 00:43:20 UTC
srini, so did you change that "hey, we have a problem [option should go into prefs instead of menus], but we avoid it by trying to solve another problem [find a better menu item name]." opinion?
don't tell me that any user will be able to guess what will be in the submenu - layout? preview? which one was it? (and how badly will it be translated to all those other languages? i guess there is no translation comment)

two weeks until ui freeze left.

i am definitely not content.

i would appreciate a fix instead of just trying to sit problems out - you know which guys will spend their time with showing IRC users over and over again at which great and obvious place their settings are hidden? okay.
Comment 7 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-07-11 16:39:43 UTC
Andre: OK. This can go under Mail Preferences/General/Message Display. NOSIP TASK.
Comment 8 André Klapper 2006-07-11 21:20:37 UTC
well, than the nosipian should be *pretty* fast with fixing this - two weeks left. volunteers? :-)
Comment 9 André Klapper 2006-07-12 14:31:20 UTC
ok, this is a task for raghav as decided by srini. :-)

what to do?

- add a section to "edit > preferences > mail preferences> general > message Display which lets the user decide whether to use the classic mode or the wide screen mode. (make sure that you also provide mnemonics for those two strings, ideally, use the existing ones, *if* they do not interfere).
the current dialog does already not fit in 800x600, and 1024x768 will be already very hard. this is probably the toughest task. any ideas are gladly appreciated.

- move "view > preview > show message preview" to "view > layout > show message preview"

- remove "view > preview"

- either rename "view > layout" to "view > bars" (not sure about this, but the term "layout" is just meaningless to any user") - if we do so, add a translator comment and a mnemonic to "Bars", see http://developer.gnome.org/doc/tutorials/gnome-i18n/developer.html#use-comments for more information.

- if we do not rename, at least add a mnemonic to "Layout". make sure that it does not interfere with existing mnemonics in that menu.

this has to be done before UI and string freeze takes place (monday, 24th of july), so we have to hurry up.
if somebody commits a patch for this to CVS, make sure that both gnome-i18n and gnome-doc-list mailing lists get informed about the changes - don't just attach the patch, explain what has changed - those people are not developers, those people are documentors. they do not necessarily have to understand C code.

Comment 11 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-07-21 04:02:42 UTC
This patch can do it. But there is a HUGE HUGE issue. From the preference window, you can dynamically modify the layout to vertical view when the user changes it. Through code it is not possible (So Im rejecting my patch). With out this, I would prefer to go with the existing approach.

BTW, La_yout has a mnemonic. Any issue with that?

Comment 12 André Klapper 2006-08-06 13:34:02 UTC
> BTW, La_yout has a mnemonic. Any issue with that?
yes. one cannot use the small letters {g,j,p,q,y} for mnemonics, because obviously the mnemonic underlining cannot be displayed for these letters.

Bumping version to a stable release.
Comment 14 André Klapper 2021-05-19 12:28:48 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new bug report ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
