GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 344377
[HANDLER] Writing a Math handler
Last modified: 2008-06-16 12:30:53 UTC
If deskbar could do simple math, it would mean that I don't have to start gcalctool just to do a quick calculation (or get a pen and do it by hand ;-) ). I often find myself starting gcalctool to do a simple calculation, and then close it only to open it 5 minutes later. KDE, for example, has a calculator applet for kicker, and also a dictionary applet. Deskbar already does the dictionary side (and much much more), and it would be great if it could also do the calculator side. thanks
There is a math handler in the mailing list archives, we are also building a way to download handlers on a web repository, which would allow us to provide more handlers than the curretly shipped one (because not everybody needs all those handlers). So when the plugin downloader is ready, we'll probably go and add all contributed handlers to it..
Someone should attach a math handler here :)
Marking as gnome love. Writing a math handler is easy. It should maybe show the result of the computation, and copy the result when selected. If you search through mailing list of deskbar-applet, you'll find some old examples of math handlers
I would suggest supporting the execution of arbitrary commands, and showing their results in place of the search result list. Then math can be done as a special case of a command. The deskbar would be much more powerful.
A 3rd-party module called Calculator is already available. Have a look at http://live.gnome.org/DeskbarApplet/Extending.
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but we are happy to tell you that the problem has already been fixed. It should be solved in the next software version. You may want to check for a software upgrade. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 535362 ***
