When you have quite a few remote locations (>7), you don't want them to be shown on your desktop since it's just clutter. On the other hand you may still want the icon of your usb key to show up when you plug it in.

I think the preference to show both types of icons (drives and remote locations) should be splitted into two, at least at the gconf-level. I propose having /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible and /apps/nautilus/desktop/remote_locations_visible (for instance) instead of the current unique key, so that it's possible to hide one of them without losing both.
