Description Juan Márquez 2006-05-17 04:58:25 UTC
I saw that there's a "shade" function but it isn't yet an actual window button, Can a window button be
made that you can select to shade instead of minimizing apps? Also I noticed in the gconf-editor that
since gnome 2.1.x there's something called "Application-based" task switching, but it says that it's not
implemented. I have noticed that this feature have been like that since gnome 2.1.x up to 2.12.x
(possibly even in 2.14.x) can it be implemented?

As far as the application-based thing, most likely not. As for the shading button thing, that's been fixed in Thomas' branch. Since you have two bugs in one, I'll make this about the shade button issue and mark as a duplicate.

Elijah. Why the "application-based" thing isn't accepted. Is it b/c it's a Mac feature?
Comment 3 Elijah Newren 2006-05-19 19:55:03 UTC
I've not used a mac in like a decade and even then I only did so minimally; so, since "application-based" is defined as "behave more like the mac" I have no idea what it's supposed to mean. So I can't implement it. I probably wouldn't even if I knew what it meant given that there are many far more important bugs, IMO. And I don't see anyone else that looks particularly interested. So, it's not so much of not accepting such a feature as just a lack of interest. If someone came along that was interested and implemented it, then we'd have to look at the patch and behavior and see if it's sane and if it'll break apps or not.

"Application-based" behavior means that if you bring one window from one app to the front all the other open windows from the same app come to the front automatically. For example. If you have 3 Nautilus windows open, one in the home folder, the second in a USB key, and the third in a Samba share. Bringing one of the nautilus windows to the front would bring the other two to the front simultaneously. It's useful specially if the window you need to access is behind a stack of windows from other apps (c'mon. Who haven't seen that one happen) but there is another window from the same app partially visible, in this case all you need is to bring the partially visible window and it drags the covered one out. But well, seeing that all of you at gnome treat Mac-like features as "not interesting and minor" I guess I'm at a loss and my dreamed OS9 gui on "FREE" software is just not going to happen. Or is it illegal to love the OS9 gui and to want it FULLY REPLICATED on a simple and elegant DE? B/C IF IT IS ILLEGAL THEN I'M JUST GOING TO GET A GUN AND KILL SOME MICRODROIDS, at least then the scum at the U$ Police dept will have a real reason to put me in jail and not just b/c I'm violating "Patent and Copyright" BULLSHIT. And don't get me started on DirectFB compatibility on Darwin, the lack of a nice graphical multi-boot capable boot manager for Macs, the Apple corp transition to Intel, the lack of themeing, a corner bar, and a usable spatial finder (or nautilus port) on OSX, And idiotic ISP's who play unfair with users of Mac or Linux/BSD systems. B/c it can become a killing spree.
