GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 341686
Adding an option to add/remove lines from fstab
Last modified: 2020-11-13 10:41:18 UTC
Patching gparted will add an option to popup menu to add partitions to /etc/fstab, or to change options and mountpoint values. I have seen lot of Linux new users with same problem: "how to add my Windows partition to fstab". Then they have to install some "rare" programs or to edit manually /etc/fstab, which is problematic for new user (change user to root, edit, etc.) This patch tries to "fix" it. Problems with the patch: probably only for Linux operating system (I don't know if gparted is working in other architectures). Maybe this option should be disabled in other architectures (at configure time).
Created attachment 65404 [details] [review] Patch to add "edit fstab" option Patch is in first stage, a kind of "proof of concept". Will save the changes to /etc/fstab2 If we really want to incorporate to gparted, it is fine to improve some things, and add some checks (or change the behaviour of patch and apply changes with other changes from gparted queue changes, etc.)
I would like to add something. The patch that I sent 2 days ago allows you to edit or delete lines from fstab, but not to add. And edit lines should be clever: if user changes the filesystem, should adapt there too (or allow user to edit file system field). In some days I will add this features to new patch. But we should think if this is interesting for gparted or no :-)
Nice work, why add/remove lines from fstab patch isn't included in GParted CVS ?
because (IMHO) it doesn't really belong in a partitioner. I will consider adding it when including ubuntu's installerpatch in the official gpartedtree.
plors: if you want to add the patch, tell me and I will do some more test. I think that the patch will not work for some partition that is not in /etc/fstab (easy to fix it, I can do it in the middle of next week). When I made the patch I was thinking with Ubuntu users :-) (I am Debian user, but I have helped some Ubuntu users... and it should be fine to be able to change /etc/fstab from Gparted, IMHO)
I think that this is an excellent idea, especially considering that there are currently few applications that can do this - for a point of reference, you could look at DiskDrake [1], which already works pretty well but appears to be part of the Mandriva Control Center.
Hi Mike! Just this week I wanted to ping it (as now I have a few free time to improve it, if the idea likes and there is any chance to have in the mainstream program). The actual implementation if I remmeber good has some problems... So, pinging it again, to know if there is interest...

They all share a single swap file. Will gparted know how to update the non active distributions?
