Hmm. Can't reproduce here (under any locales). Are you seeing the strange characters anywhere else? (i.e. in content tables on the front page of manuals, between the number and the title). Are you able to reproduce under different locales? (From the command line, run LANGUAGE=en_GB yelp ). There was a patch applied to fix a similar issue around yelp 2.13.6. Any chance your running a version from before that?
No difference with LANGUAGE=C or LANGUAGE=en_GB $ yelp --version Gnome yelp 2.14.1 The version is 2.14.1, although I have this problem from long before 2.14, like 2.6 and above. The strange characters appear only in the header and footer part of each page. Sending you one more screenshot. My system is Slackware 10.2 , Dropline Gnome 2.14.1

I tried to set up different fonts, but it didn't helped. If there is more info that you need me to provide, please let me know. Apparently, I don't have real IP and cannot start a vino-server.
I'm no longer on Slackware and cannot reproduce the bug on any other GNU system. Anyways, Slackware is known to have locale problems, so this bug can be closed as NOTGNOME.
Looks to me like a missing or bogus glyph for em space. Closing per comment #6.
