In GTK+ 1, the user could type the beginning of a filename and then press [TAB] to filter the selectable files to those that matched.

Also, 

*frog [TAB] to get a list of filenames with frogs in them
or [A-Z] [TAB] to get a list of filesnames starting with capital letters
or if they really wanted to, f?ck [TAB]

That functionality was extremely useful and should be restored.
