Ticks for date scales are not rounded to month/year/week boundary.
They are rounded as number of days, then converted to date format.
This results in tick labels like e.g. 05.12.03  04.12.04  04.12.05.
(IIRC MS Excel is not better here.)

This part is actually done now.

I'm keeping bug 574681 open for the input/output format issues.
