I have a very very simple doubt:

In order for Totem to autodetect the subs file for a given video, must they be
placed in the very same folder the video is, or does the possibility to store
them on a hardcoded subfolder like "subtitles" or something like that?

You can launch subtitles using:
file:///file.avi#subtitle:file.srt
