when you create a new file from the menu "create new document -- > empty
file "  after the creation of the file , the new file  should be
selected  so you just press <enter> to start editing this.

This should be fixed in 2.14, if you can reproduce it in GNOME 2.14, please reopen the bug I'm closing this duplicate of.
