Description Sebastien Bacher 2006-03-31 12:13:09 UTC
That bug has been opened on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/36500

"This happens when deleting a folder from the left (tree) pane. When a
folder is removed from within the main pane, everything works as expected. Nautilus just closes, does not seem a a crash with a bug buddy and all that...
Nautilus version: 2.14.0
...
I see this too:
nautilus 2.14.0-0ubuntu3

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to Places -> Home folder .
2. Press Ctrl-Shift-n and type new .
3. Press the right mouse button on new and go to Browse Folder .
4. If the side pane is not visible press F9. If the side pane is not on tree, click on the dropdown arrow in the side pane and choose tree.
7. Press the right mouse button on new in the side pane and choose Move to Wastebasket.

Hrm, we considered this a fix. Whenever a folder is deleted or moved to trash, windows displaying it will be closed. It was introduced shortly before Nautilus 2.14.0.
Comment 2 Sebastien Bacher 2006-04-04 19:18:55 UTC
Christian, that makes sense for spatial mode probably but not for browser mode

Distribution bug submitter commented:

"I would expect the Tree view to shift to the folder above it, and then I'd expect the right pane to reflect the contents of this new folder.

I think the behavior I just outlined is not only expected, but practiced by nearly every other file manager on the planet, and none of them close (crash) when a folder is deleted.

I'd also expect a switch to the parent folder in treeview mode.

adding usability keyword and asking for advise.

That is crazy!. I'm browsing my filesystem with a treeview in the left panel, and if I delete one of those files then nautilus closes??

Thats mad..By the same token; why not make it so that when I delete a file in the right panel that Nautilus closes as well... thats a crazy idea also.

Comment #2 from Sebastien Bacher makes sense. I've never ever used a filenamager that closes when I delete an item in the tree.

I absolutely love open source.

To see a niggle being patched in less than 50 lines of code (which I dont understand anyway).

Wonderful stuff.. thanks everyone ;-)

I would like to re-open this bug as it happens to me now in Ubuntu 11.10. Could this regression be related to the recent transition to GNOME3?
I'm using Nautilus 1:3.2.0-0ubuntu5 64-bit with the Unity interface.

To recreate:
Open Nautilus
Create new folder in Nautilus
Click: View > Sidebar > Tree
Expand the tree to show your new folder
Right click on the new folder in the Sidebar tree
Delete folder

Nautilus closes all of its open windows without warning.

Ben,

I am not able to reproduce following your steps with nautilus 3.2.1

The folder is removed just fine.
