GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 334936
"Open With" dialog contents should be categorized (e.g. games, accessories, etc)
Last modified: 2006-04-02 21:33:03 UTC
As of now, when you right click on a file and choose the "Open with Other Application..." option, you are presented with the "Open With" dialog in which there is a collection of the applications in the system (sorted alphabetically). This doesn't make sense to me, because I don't even know the exact names of the applications that I use (especially the ones I don't use too often). What I'd rather have is all of the applications categorized in their own categories, just like the "Applications" menu in the "Menu Bar" is. -Gezim Other information: I'm using ubuntu 5.10, BTW. And how the hell do I get a "advanced new bug" page instead of this "simple bug guide"?
Thanks for your bug report! IIRC we discussed this already, and the result was that when somebody uses this functionality he usually knows exactly which application he will pick. Applications should register themselves correctly for their associated file types, so you really shouldn't have to use this functionality unless the distributor/application developer didn't take care of associations, or you know exactly what application to associate. Maybe you could name the involved application/file types, so that we can inform the application authors about the lack of file associations? > how the hell do I get a "advanced new bug" page instead of this "simple bug guide"? On http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ either pick "New bug" from the top ruler, or "advanced form" under "2.".

First, it's obvious this assumption is wrong--in my case anyway. Second, names seem to be inconsistent, meaning that sometimes the _function_ of a program is listed not the program name in the "Open with..." dialogue. For example: "Add application" that's not a program as far as I'm concerned. The other problem is that it's not secret that OSS applications have horrible names, which are really hard to remember, so again, categorizing would help. Third, even if your assumption in most cases _is_ true (which I don't think it is), would it be really bad and break usability if the apps were categorized. I think not. It would just make it easier than scanning a list of 87 programs (that how many show up in my system). > Applications should register themselves correctly for their associated file > types, so you really shouldn't have to use this functionality unless the > distributor/application developer didn't take care of associations, or you know > exactly what application to associate. Again, lots of things _should_ happen, but guess what, they _don't_. Thanks for your time, -Gezim
