You forgot to specify your operating system. But you could also have a look at bug 314529, this has been a frequent cause for such errors recently.

Let's assume that this is a duplicate, GTK+ 2.6.9 and the point where GIMP fails match - at least resolving it as such might lead others to the bug with the most information.
