GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 333058
"Authentication Required" dialog (for sftp access) is not labelled as generated by Nautilus and for what protocol
Last modified: 2010-07-05 15:50:23 UTC
This is a pretty simple request to add a few more bits of helpful information to the dialog box. The "Authentication Required" dialog displayed when connecting/reconnecting to an SFTP server does not supply enough information. If this dialog is displayed due to some event other than direct user request, it is mysterious. The dialog should * Identify that it is a Nautilus dialog in the title bar, according to standard Gnome practice * Identify not just the server, but also the protocol (SFTP in my case). If applicable, the name of the bookmark used to connect to the server would be helpful. Another helpful trick would be to raise the relevant Nautilus window (but remaining underneath the dialog), but I don't know whether or not this is considered an OK behavior in Gnome. Thanks Other information:
Thanks for your bug report! Isn't the heart of the issue that "(...) this dialog is displayed due to some event other than direct user request (...)."? Maybe you could elaborate a bit on that event? :)
It's happening whenever I go to change the properties of my gnome panel. I have no idea why. I'm trying to gather a bit more information about how I managed to get gnome into this state; It may be my fault (I'm hacking some applets and replacing them in the panel without restarting it). I'll open a seperate bug if it's really a bug and not just something I broke.
BTW, I now know why it's trying to connect to remote servers "randomly"-- it's because I have it bookmarked. After removing the bookmarks this never happens. It happens both for SMB shares as well as SFTP. I imagine that Gnome or Nautilus or Gnome-Panel is for some reason accessing information via my bookmarks when I open my panel properties.
See bug 621583 for a patch against gvfs that fixes this.
