GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 329693
"none" and "unnamed" need gettext prefix
Last modified: 2009-12-23 16:13:09 UTC
we use the string "none" in many places: #. an empty string is the same as 'None' #. Put the "None" and "UTC" entries at the top of the combo's list. #. When "None" is selected we want the field to be cleared. #. Note that we don't show this here, since by default a 'None' date #. is not permitted. #: ../calendar/gui/dialogs/meeting-page.c:313 #: ../calendar/gui/dialogs/meeting-page.glade.h:4 #: ../calendar/gui/e-cal-model-tasks.c:653 #: ../calendar/gui/e-itip-control.c:1106 ../composer/e-msg-composer.c:2122 #: ../filter/filter-rule.c:881 ../mail/em-account-editor.c:683 #: ../mail/em-account-editor.c:1348 ../mail/em-account-prefs.c:464 #: ../mail/em-folder-view.c:1064 ../mail/em-junk-hook.c:78 #: ../plugins/calendar-weather/calendar-weather.c:370 #: ../plugins/calendar-weather/calendar-weather.c:424 #: ../plugins/exchange-operations/exchange-delegates.glade.h:7 #: ../plugins/itip-formatter/itip-formatter.c:1627 #: ../widgets/e-timezone-dialog/e-timezone-dialog.c:190 #: ../widgets/misc/e-cell-date-edit.c:248 ../widgets/misc/e-dateedit.c:465 #: ../widgets/misc/e-dateedit.c:1504 ../widgets/misc/e-dateedit.c:1673 msgid "None" in german language, "none" can mean "kein" oder "keine" - it depends on what it refers to. e.g. "Birthday: None" would be "Geburtstag: Kein", but "Signature: None" would be "Signatur: Keine". to improve l10n of evolution, we have to differentiate by adding translator comments for each occurrence.
it's the same with "Unnamed" i guess. #: ../mail/em-composer-prefs.c:307 ../mail/em-composer-prefs.c:430 #: ../mail/mail-config.c:958 msgid "Unnamed"
how to add translator comments: http://developer.gnome.org/doc/tutorials/gnome-i18n/developer.html#use-comments
i also vote for using 'unknown' sometimes, because i do not know any existing people which have no birthday.
seems like we net gettext context and not only translation comments. :-(
Created attachment 71511 [details] [review] Translator comments added. I have added translator comments for all the cases mentioned above. ngettext cases are already there, where ever required.
ushveen, did you test this at all by running intltool-update in the po directory and after that taking a look into the evolution-2.8.pot file? pretty sure i am right with comment #4 and your patch is the wrong way - it would just put all those comments in front of the string, but not differentiate them. that's why i wrote that "gettext context (that | thingy)" is probably needed, but i want you to test this yourself.
Bumping version to a stable release.
Created attachment 150305 [details] [review] evo patch for evolution; Updated for actual master. For word "None" only, as the "Unnamed" is used with signatures only. Note that it'll start work fully as soon as intltool-update will be able to read contexts from .ui files (they are not with my 0.41.0).
Created commit 3f36489 in evo master (2.29.5+)
