Description Brandon Kuczenski 2006-01-17 22:50:44 UTC
Distribution: Debian testing/unstable
Package: gnome-media
Severity: normal
Version: GNOME2.10.2 2.10.x
Gnome-Distributor: Debian
Synopsis: gnome-volume-manager fails to detect multiple simultaneous X sessions
Bugzilla-Product: gnome-media
Bugzilla-Component: general
Bugzilla-Version: 2.10.x
Description:
Description of Problem:
The symptoms here are in gnome-cd but I believe the problem lies in
gnome-volume-manager or somewhere lower. The bug concerns gnome's
behavior when there are two users logged in (both using gnome) to
different X11 sessions simultaneously. If both users have
gnome-volume-manager configured to automatically play audio CDs, the
problem appears. When a CD is inserted, gnome-cd starts in both gnome
sessions, and the two processes seize all available CPU time between
them. Total CPU occupancy continues until both gnome-cd instances are
shut down (requiring participation from both users or the superuser) and
can result in system instability.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Login to Gnome as one user on one X11 session.
1a. User must have gnome-volume-properties configured so that audio cds
get played automatically (the default setting)
2. Use the Gnome menu to select System Tools -> New Login
3. Login on a new X11 session as another user, also in Gnome
3a. User must also have gnome-volume-properties etc etc.
4. Insert an audio CD.
5. From a terminal, run 'top' and watch two gnome-cd processes duke it
out.

Actual Results:
Two instances of gnome-cd are started, one for each session of gnome,
which occupy all available CPU cycles until both are terminated.
Sometimes, the CD begins to play in one session; other times it does not
begin to play at all.

Expected Results:
One instance of gnome-cd is started for the user whose X11 session has
'focus' at the time the CD is inserted.

How often does this happen?
Consistently.

Additional Information:
A similar problem, with less severe consequences, occurs when a DVD is
inserted: only one instance of totem movie player is started to play the
movie, but it is not predictable on which of two desktops it will do
so.
