Description Dave Malcolm 2006-01-13 22:25:04 UTC
The imap backend provides virtual Junk and Trash folders. If a user's IMAP store has actual folders called "Junk" and "Trash", then they can't be reached in the evolution UI.

I'm about to attach a patch from our downstream bugzilla that adds an option to display these folders, though I think these ought to be advanced options.

Downstream bug report is here:

Patch to make virtual imap folders optional
Comment 2 Dave Malcolm 2006-01-13 22:29:26 UTC
IMHO this probably needs to wait for a reorganization of the email account UI before it can be applied; the options are complex enough already.
Comment 3 David Woodhouse 2006-01-13 22:55:37 UTC
The real answer is not to abuse the IMAP namespace at all -- if you want these folders, you put them _elsewhere_. But since I want them turned off anyway, and since I _definitely_ want them turned off for my father who would otherwise be confused by them, I'm happy enough with the above patch on its own.

Thanks for the patch, Dave. :)

Unfortunately, this is a duplicate. Closing as such. Going to add notes about the patch to bug 206061.

Not really a duplicate. That other bug is about how you should implement Trash folders, if you want them -- whether they should be 'virtual' or 'real' trash folders.

This bug is about the way you're abusing the IMAP namespace by assuming that you can impose certain nodes in the folder tree without obscuring _real_ folders which already existed there -- it's orthogonal.

Whether you do 'real' or 'virtual' trash folders, as discussed in bug #206061, is irrelevant to this bug -- either way, they must not be in a hard-coded location within the IMAP folder tree, which the user could be already using for other purposes.

It would be good to have an option to Choose the Trash and Junk folders (like the Drafts and Sent Items Currently). Probably for the next release. It is not going to go in this release for sure.
And Dave, thanks for the patch. This patch wont be committed upstream this release. UI changes in the account editor are needed. We are already thru the UI freeze.

David, if you believe this is not a duplicate but a separate issue, feel free to reopen this bug. If you can't due to bugzilla permissions, just drop me a note.
Comment 8 Karsten Bräckelmann 2006-03-20 16:32:36 UTC
According to comment 5 and the discussion on IRC, reopening.
