Description Thomas Winwood 2005-12-19 00:43:47 UTC
I suggest that a right-click menu be added allowing quicker addition of
bookmarks. Additionally, I suggest that drag-and-drop be implemented so that a
user can easily add a folder to which they have browsed without needing to
resort to the Bookmarks menu (a user does not automatically associate the Places
menu with bookmarks).

I also suggest that the Network window (network:) be listed in the permanent
section of the Places menu.

Other information:
The Places menu ought to act in a similar way to the side menu in the OSX
Finder, and this is the rationale in which I submit this bug.

Regarding Network window: what do you consider the 'permanent section' ?
As of GNome 2.12 there is an icon "Network Servers" always visible in the Places menu (well, as long as the Samba networking services are running, I believe)

By the way this thought should be filed agains gnome-panel, component menu bar along with a reference to this report. You should mention that you want something changed for consistency with the suggestions in this report.

Regaring the first paragraph, I have no idea what you mean, where the right-click menu should be added, from where to where one should be able to drag-and-drop etc... please explain briefly, but precisely.
Comment 2 Thomas Winwood 2005-12-20 16:17:42 UTC
Apologies. The "permanent section" of the Places menu is those icons which cannot be changed; they occur at the top of the list and are separated from the other icons by a grey line.

I am using Nautilus 2.13.3 and there is no Network Servers icon in the Places menu. I'll attach a screenshot of my home folder.

As for the rightclick, the user should be able to drag folders into the Places bar rather than going to Bookmarks > Add Bookmark or pressing Ctrl-D (this adds a bookmark for the currently open folder rather than the currently selected folder, which is counterintuitive). Also, rightclicking an entry in the Places menu should provide a menu allowing the user to remove the entry more quickly than going to Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks and finding the entry again, which is wasteful.

I'm trying to make the Places menu more smooth to use; Thunar uses a nice system which typifies what I'm aiming at.

I should ask you more clearly but politely to submit only problem/request per report. Yes, this is time-consuming. But it will get things sorted out better.
Do not mean to offend you, but this can be very confusing for developers and discouraging (5 requests at once -- tiresome).
We have no bug report number limit :)

I am renaming this report do make it the d&d request, since you assigned it to the places sidepane.

so we have a few requeste here:
1) d&d of folders to the places sidepane (this report)

2) Ctrl-D shortcut should bookmark selected folder(s)
3) right-clicking places-sidepane entry should offer a menu with a removal entry

so please file two additional requests. Thanks.

the network item not being listed is probably because you do not have the samba file sharing daemon installed or running, or you compiled nautilus without previously installing the samba development packages.

-----

As for the d&d I may be up for implementing it.

Thanks for the heads-up. (I'm something of a bugfiling virgin, so I'm bound to slip up here and there. My intention was to lump together related suggestions into one bug; that's just how I work.) I've filed these two bugs:

Bug 324634 - "Add Bookmark" entry (and Ctrl-D shortcut) should bookmark selected folder
Bug 324640 - Right-clicking should provide context menu for removing entries

first drag and drop patch suggestions are in Bug 43311
Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find.
